Extend the Run Time of Your Laptop's Battery Life
By Stephen Almanson
My favorite toy is my laptop computer. I love the flexibility it gives me. Sure I can replicate most of the things I do on my cel phone, but I would much rather use my laptop. I mean really, who would want to watch a video on the small screen of their cel phone when a laptop is pretty convenient. The only real complaint most people have is the battery life is not long enough.
Statistics say that the current average battery life for a rechargeable laptop battery life is 78 minutes. So after an hour, you need to start hunting for an outlet or you need to shut things down. This can be inconvenient to say the least. An hour is not very much time at all.
But there are a few things you can do to extend those 78 minutes. If you are watching a DVD or streaming video, or if you are playing games, you will drain your battery much more rapidly than if you are running a simple program such as email or a word processor. The way you use your laptop can provide you with more or less battery time.
First, it is a good idea to keep your monitor as dim as you can. Brightness is one of the easiest things to adjust on your laptop. If your are outside during the day, you will need to have the brightness up pretty high to compete with the sun. However, if you are working indoors, you can usually adjust downward. You can also lower the resolution of your screen and limit your use of graphics.
If you use a USB mouse, you should try to get used to your touchpad and use that instead when you are on battery power. External devices drain battery power, so it is helpful to use then only when you can plug in. Also, you will want to hold off on charging things like your MP3 players until you can plug your laptop into an outlet. Charging peripherals is another obvious drain on power.
Another thing to keep in mind is that multi-tasking uses more battery power than simply doing one thing at a time. Background programs also eat up battery power, so you should shut down anything that may be active in the background.
Easy to use programs like email and word processing or spreadsheet programs are more usable when you are trying to conserve battery than playing games. If you are using an application that has an auto-save option, turn that off. You will need to periodically save your work manually, especially as you get battery is running out of power.
Using hibernate instead of standby will gain you a bit of battery time too. If you have a newer computer you can manage your power options in your control panel; select max battery option.
Finally, if your batter no longer holds a charge well, you can buy a new battery, however you will probably not gain much time between charges. Or you may want to consider buying a new laptop. There are some laptops which promise hours of battery time. Just make sure to do your research ahead of time to get the computer that will best suit your needs.
